Akram Khan Distinguished by his speed and stillness, Akram Khan’s movement language developed organically by injecting the classical Indian dance form Kathak into his contemporary training. His choreography is the embodiment of his collaborations with artists and is fueled by the deep desire to story tell.


This 6-day programme has been designed to be a fully-immersive training and sharing experience. Under the direction of the Company’s highly experienced senior team – Mavin Khoo, Nicola Monaco, Andrej Petrovič and Joy Alpuerto Ritter – you will have a unique opportunity to challenge your own practice, to submerge into the creative processes of Company repertoire, to broaden your artistic horizon and to experience studio work with Akram himself.

This Intensive is open to 45 professional dancers and students above the age of 18, with a contemporary and/or ballet background.

    Akram Khan is one of the most celebrated dance artists today, building his reputation on the success of imaginative, highly accessible and profoundly moving productions such as Until the Lions, Kaash, iTMOi (in the mind of igor), DESH, Vertical Road, Gnosis and zero degrees. As an instinctive and natural collaborator, Khan has been a magnet to world-class artists from cultures and disciplines such as the National Ballet of China, actress Juliette Binoche, ballerina Sylvie Guillem, choreographers/dancers Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Israel Galván, singer Kylie Minogue, visual artists Anish Kapoor, Antony Gormley and Tim Yip, and composers Steve Reich, Nitin Sawhney, Jocelyn Pook and Ben Frost. A highlight of his career was the creation of a section of the London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony that was received with unanimous acclaim.

  • Mavin Khoo

    Mavin Khoo is internationally recognised as a dance artist, teacher, choreographer and artist scholar. His initial training was in Malaysia. He then pursued his training in Bharatanatyam intensively under the legendary dance maestro Padma Shri Adyar K. Lakshman in India. As a contemporary dance artist, he has worked with Wayne McGregor, Akram Khan, Shobana Jeyasingh and many others. Khoo founded mavinkhooDance in 2003. He was Artistic Director of ŻfinMalta Dance Ensemble between 2014 - 2017. He currently maintains his touring work as a mature artist with a focus on solo Bharatanatyam performances and specifically commissioned contemporary duet works. He also worked as Rehearsal Director for Akram Khan Company production iTMOi and worked alongside Akram on Giselle (English National Ballet).

  • Joy Alpuerto Ritter

    Joy Alpuerto Ritter was born in Los Angeles and raised in Germany. She started training in ballet and philippine folk dance as a child. Graduating from Palucca School in Germany, Joy has been working with choreographers such as Christoph Winkler, Heike Hennig and Company’s such as Cirque du Soleil. Joy’s interest in urban dance lead her to expand her repertory to Hip Hop and Voguing. She has been touring internationally with Company Wangramirez and Akram Khan Company since 2012. Joy was nominated for ‘Outstanding Female Dancer (contemporary)’ at the UK National Dance Awards for her performance in Until the Lions. She is assistant choreographer for Dragon Spring Phoenix Rise, Akram's upcoming collaboration with The Shed, New York.

  • Andrej Petrovič

    Andrej Petrovič was born 1982 in Bojnice, Slovakia and graduated from the Dance Conservatory in Banska Bystrica before joining Študio Tanca Professional Dance Theatre/Zuzana Hájková. For the last decade, Andrej has worked extensively with Akram Khan Company as a dancer, and rehearsal director for productions such as Bahok, Confluence and Vertical Road. Andrej was movement coach and dancer in Akram’s piece devised for the 2012 Opening Ceremony for the London Olympic Games and choreographic assistant in the company production iTMOi as well as the award-winning reimaging of Giselle for English National Ballet.

  • Nicola Monaco

    Nicola started his training in contemporary and ballet at the age of nineteen in Italy. In 2001, he attended the professional course of Aterballetto under the direction of Mauro Bigonzetti and at the end of his training he joined the dance company Artemis Danza directed by Monica Casadei. In 2016, he was appointed rehearsal director for the national company of Malta Zfin Malta Dance Ensemble directed by Mavin Khoo. Nicola joined Akram Khan Company touring with the productions iTMOi and Kaash, and is now touring worldwide as rehearsal director for Akram’s final full-length solo, XENOS.
