Traditions and Innovations

An ensemble of young cellists takes advantage of the residency to create a program dedicated to sound research and musical experimentation, under the guidance of renowned cellist and composer Giovanni Sollima.

The artistic residency thus becomes a journey of shared creation, in which musicians work side by side, developing ideas in a continuous dialogue between individual sensibilities and collective vision. The result is an immersive experience that intertwines different musical languages, from ancient to contemporary, from folk to minimalism, giving rise to new sounds and engaging rhythmic suggestions.

Giovanni Sollima is one of the most original Italian composers and cellists on the contemporary scene, known for his extraordinary interpretative energy and musical writing that spans eras and genres. His deeply communicative music blends Mediterranean rhythms, Italian melodic flair, baroque elements, and incursions into rock and metal, contributing significantly to the expansion of the cello repertoire. Born in Palermo and trained by Giovanni Perriera, Antonio Janigro, and Eliodoro Sollima, he has collaborated with choreographers such as Karole Armitage and Carolyn Carlson, directors such as Bob Wilson and Peter Stein, and filmmakers such as Marco Tullio Giordana and John Turturro. In 2012, he founded the “100 Cellos” project with Enrico Melozzi, an open music workshop that brings together musicians of all ages and backgrounds. He teaches at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome and the Fondazione Romanini in Brescia. He plays a Francesco Ruggeri cello, made in Cremona in 1679.
