Diego Tortelli

Workshop

Sep 26 – Sep 30, 2024

The Workshop This September, Diego Tortelli will be teaching a workshop for dancers and advanced dance students.

As in life, I believe that in dance there are no missteps. Beauty lies in the execution, in the emotion and in the sound we decide to give to each step, whether it has the delicacy of a whisper or the violence of a scream.

Diego Tortelli

During the workshop, participants will dive into his creative world and body aesthetics, learning repertoire from previous pieces created for Aterballetto, Hannover Staatstheater and the Greek National Dance Company and of course the work that he developed with his own collective, shared with dramaturg Miria Wurm, and based in Munich. Pivotal to each of his pieces is Tortelli’s very own choreographic idiom, which breaks down the body into its various limbs and joints and then reassembles them over and over again, as in a game of Tetris. The torso remains the fixed point around which everything revolves, as if calculated by geometric formulas – at times playful and surreal, at others architectural and rigid. The body is revealed in all its beauty and artistry, but also its fragility and brokenness. Traces of bodily memories are brought to light through a process of poetic abstraction.

In his workshop Tortelli will give insights into his work and approach to the body and show improvisation tools that train the connection between mind and body in order to develop the ability to choose what comes next and to let go of what came before by connecting to the memory of it.

This program is the result of a relationship between Orsolina28 Art Foundation and Diego Tortelli that started in 2023, when Tortelli had his first residency. In this beautiful and creative relationship Diego takes inspiration from the energy that lives through the walls, nature and people that pass by and live in this venue.

Diego Tortelli

Diego Tortelli, born in 1987 in Brescia, studied at the Accademia Teatro alla Scala.

His career started with the Ballet de Teatres in Valencia, followed by an invitation from Gustavo Ramirez to join the Luna Negra Dance Theater in Chicago. In 2012 he became a member of the Ballet National de Marseille under the artistic direction of Frédéric Flamand. He has been a freelancer since 2015, working with the Bavarian State Ballet, Richard Siegal’s The Bakery and Ballet of Difference, Korzo Theatre and La Veronal, among others.

Since 2015 he has also been concentrating on his own choreographic practice, creating pieces for INTRODANS and CND Madrid, Teatro Massimo in Palermo, MILANoLTRE Festival and Palcoscenico Danza Torino, MCA Chicago. In 2017, he presented his first full-length piece "Sleeping Beauty" for Nuovo Balletto di Toscana. The following year, he created "Lorca sono tutti" and "Domus Aurea", part of the Bach Project, for the Fondazione Nazionale della Danza/Aterballetto.

His first collaboration with dramaturg Miria Wurm named "Shifting Perspective" premiered at the Muffathalle in Munich. Their second piece "SNOW CRASH" followed in 2020, then "HOLE IN SPACE" in 2021, "Fo:No" for the Biennale of Venice, "GOD's FORMULA" in 2022 and in 2023 “TERRANOVA | body maps” co-produced by Orsolina28. Their newest production “TERRANOVA I hidden link” just premiered in March 2024 at the Tanzfestival Saar.

In 2019, Diego Tortelli was appointed house-choreographer in residence at the Fondazione Nazionale della Danza/Aterballetto in Italy, where he has created multiple works for the company in form of stage production. In 2021 he was the winner of the first call for Italian artists launched by La Biennale di Venezia with the Dance Department, directed by Wayne McGregor. In 2023 he further developed these two sides of his career, dividing his time between creating works for companies and working on film projects such as PARADE for arte.tv. At the end of 2023 he created an adaptation of his piece “HOLE IN SPACE” for the Greek National Ballet in Athens that premiered in November 2023, and in December 2023 he created a site-specific work for Hermes in the city of Bordeaux.
