    Ballet teacher

Cyril Baldy is a distinguished dancer, choreographer, educator, rehearsal director, and stager, whose career spans more than three decades. Born in France in 1980, he embarked on his professional dance journey after studying at the prestigious Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris from 1993 to 1997. His training at this world-renowned institution laid a strong foundation for his expansive career in both classical and contemporary dance. Baldy joined his first professional company, Le Jeune Ballet de France, in 1997. A year later, he became part of Nederlands Dans Theater II, and later Nederlands Dans Theater I, under the direction of the legendary Jirí Kylián. During his time with NDT, from 1998 to 2002, he performed in some of the most groundbreaking contemporary works of the period, garnering attention for his dynamic and versatile performances. In 2002, Baldy moved to Frankfurt Ballet, where he worked under the visionary leadership of William Forsythe. This collaboration would prove to be a defining one, as Baldy later became a key member of Forsythe’s newly established company, The Forsythe Company, in 2005. He remained with The Forsythe Company until 2014, performing in many of Forsythe’s iconic pieces that pushed the boundaries of contemporary dance. This period shaped Baldy’s own artistic vision, influencing his approach to movement and choreography. Since transitioning to freelance work in 2014, Baldy has established himself as a leading figure in the international dance community. He took on roles as a choreographer, educator, rehearsal director, and stager for Forsythe’s works, contributing to renowned companies such as Ballet BC, Nederlands Dans Theater, Le Ballet de l'Opéra de Lyon, Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, and Pacific Northwest Ballet. His deep understanding of Forsythe’s complex choreographic language has made him a sought-after stager, helping to preserve and transmit Forsythe’s work to new generations of dancers. Baldy’s own choreographic work is equally celebrated. His repertoire includes Nonsense and Other Matters (2024, Arts Umbrella), Divertissement (2023, Conservatoire National Supérieur de Danse de Lyon), Choreographic Exercise (2022, Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt), and Variation(s) for a Few (2019, Tanzplattform Rhein-Main). His choreographies reflect his diverse influences, blending elements of contemporary dance with a precise and thoughtful approach to movement and form. Beyond live performances, Baldy has also ventured into film, creating works like This Is Not Raymonda But Whatever It Contains (2015) and Studio Works Collection (2017-present). His exploration of dance on screen allows him to investigate the subtleties of movement in new and innovative ways. An integral part of Baldy’s work is his commitment to education. He has taught extensively around the world, leading workshops and seminars in institutions such as PARTS (Brussels), HZT (Berlin), and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. Baldy developed a unique movement practice called the “Sentient Method,” which emphasizes the importance of sensory awareness and physical intuition in dance. This method has been embraced by dancers internationally, influencing their approach to performance and practice. In addition to his choreographic and educational endeavors, Baldy has served as a jury member for organizations such as the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon and CNDC Angers. His expertise in both classical and contemporary dance, along with his extensive experience as a performer and creator, makes him a key voice in the global dance landscape. Cyril Baldy continues to push the boundaries of dance, whether through his own creations or through his work in staging and teaching. His career is a testament to his dedication to the art of movement, and his influence is felt both on stage and in the rehearsal studio worldwide.
