Marie-Agnès Gillot joins the Corps de Ballet of the Paris Opera in 1989, at the age of 14. In 1994 becomes a “Sujet” and immediately performes in important roles in the coreographies of Carlson, Nureyev, Nijinsky, Belarbi.
In 1998 is awarded the Prix AROP de la Danse and the next year is promoted “Première Danseuse”. In 2004 she becomes Étoile after performing in “Signs”, by Carolyn Carlson: MAG is the first Étoile nominated after dancing in a contemporary coreography. Since then she keeps on interpreting all master roles of the Paris Opera ballets, either in the classic and in the contemporary repertory (Pina Bausch, Mats Ek, William Forsythe, Wayne McGregor, Angelin Preljocaj, Édouard Lock, Jerome Robbins, George Balanchine). Marie-Agnès experiments for the first time the coreographic creation in 2007, by a performance involving classical dancers and hip-hoppers and she keeps then on researching on this topic.
She collaborates to various artistic projects, among them “Sous Apparence”, a 2012 creation for the Paris Opera, that receives very much critical acclaim. In 2014 she is the main character together with Eric Reinhardt in a “lecture dansée” during the month of June at the Maison de la Poésie. In July, during the Avignon Festival, she performs in an artist duo with Lola Lafon. Together with the Manchester International Festival she leaves for a worldwide tour, starting in September 2015 at the Park Avenue Armory in New York, that will end up in January 2017 at the Paris Opera.
Marie-Agnès Gillot is Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres et de l’Ordre national du Mérite.
Marie-Agnès Gillot, Étoile at the Paris Opera Ballet, is a choreographer and an extremely powerful dancer, whose fame and divine grace are internationally acknowledged. Unforgettable protagonist of Pina Bausch’s Orpheus and Eurydice she is an absolute interpreter of Jerome Robbins and William Forsytheand has recently got utter recognition for her performance in the Season Canon by Crystal Pite.
